Philosophy
The El Camino YMCA Masters is a fitness swimming group. Coaches are here to help participants achieve their goals and to facilitate learning about the sport of Masters swimming.
Our goals are to:
Help swimmers develop a passion for the sport and a desire to participate in it as a lifelong fitness activity
Create an environment where all levels of swimmers are welcome
Help foster a sense of camaraderie and to make workouts social and fun
Offer the option of competition - whether that is in our team time trials, open water swims, local swim meets or Masters nationals
Help participates reach their goals
Instill the values of the YMCA -- Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility - through the Masters program
As mentioned, coaches are on deck to help you become better swimmers. Although they will give advice and tips during the course of each workout, if you have questions or a particular area that you would like assistance with, please specifically ask for help.

Loree Watanabe
Growing up as a competitive swimmer, I have always had a love of the water. Aquatics are a passion of mine and I enjoy teaching to all ages and levels. My experience includes coaching masters, YMCA developmental and high school swimmers. This Y's team is one of the best I have ever worked with the team is a community in itself -- the swimmers keep me motivated and energized through their shared love of the sport, great humor and being all around nice people!
In recognition of her contribution to swimming and the community, the USMS awarded Loree the Dorothy Donnelley award in 2007. Dick Thomas presented her with the certificate. (Video: Large(55MB) Small(12MB))
Lisa Schertler
I have been a master's coach for the El Camino YMCA since 2000 and really enjoy working with this social and fun loving group of recreational, fitness, triathletes and competitive swimmers. Prior to coaching at the YMCA I also coached both Masters and age group swimmers for eight years. I am currently an avid fitness swimmer, however in the past, I have participated in open water, Master's competitive, collegiate, and age group swimming events! In addition to my swimming life, I am a mom, elementary school teacher and love to be outside messing around in the garden!
